Blocks are only the visible layer
Quick answer
Block paving creates a surface from individual units, but the base, bedding, joints and edge restraint determine much of the installed result. Start with vehicle use, access, levels and drainage before choosing colour and pattern. A driveway for cars differs from a lightly used path, and the product must suit the intended use. Ask for the complete specification rather than a block price. A well-presented top layer does not establish that the concealed construction is suitable.
Conventional and permeable paving
Ordinary block paving should not automatically be called permeable because it has joints. A permeable system uses appropriate units, jointing and underlying construction to manage water. The design also needs to address ground conditions and any outfall. GOV.UK’s front-garden guidance explains why the whole arrangement matters. Ask where rainwater goes rather than accept a surface-only claim of drainage compliance. A product photograph or a loose material name cannot prove the performance of the completed driveway.
Useful next steps
Levels, edging and usable access
Agree finished levels at doors, garages, paths, boundaries and inspection covers. Edge restraint and transitions belong in the specification, not as last-minute extras. The layout should accommodate ordinary parking, turning and pedestrian access without redirecting runoff toward a vulnerable threshold. Do not assume a standard depth fits every site. The business should assess existing ground, intended loads and required construction. A clear marked layout can show the agreed area, borders and any changes in level.
Include the intended parking positions and everyday route to the front door in a simple layout. A border or pattern should not quietly change the usable area. Tell the business about heavier vehicles, delivery access and any future use already planned. It should assess those requirements rather than infer loading from the driveway’s appearance.
If two quotes propose different construction, ask each business to explain the reason and the complete result. A thicker stated layer is not by itself proof of a better design. Retained ground, loading, drainage and product-system requirements need to be understood together, with assumptions documented.
Private paving and an Essex crossing are separate
A paved frontage does not authorise driving over a pavement or changing the highway. Essex Highways has a vehicle-crossing application and implementation procedure separate from the private driveway quote. Check the proposed access, ownership and council planning requirements before ordering paving or widening an entrance.
For a Braintree front garden, national permission guidance depends on actual drainage arrangements and applicable development rights. Protected sites, conditions and other work need their own checks. Give the council the proposed surface, area, levels and receiving water route; a product described as permeable does not establish that the whole installation satisfies every requirement.

Repairs, chambers and future access
Individual units may be lifted for a local repair or access, but the base and cause of movement still need assessment. Keep inspection points accessible and have any cover/frame arrangement specified for its actual position and use. Public sewer assets can be on private land, so establish the relevant owner and proposal before altering them. Anglian Water’s asset route provides context; it does not mean every resurfacing needs the same application. A tidy recessed cover should not conceal an unapproved change.
Useful next steps
An installed block-paving quote
Ask whether the quote includes…
Request measured area, units/pattern, excavation, base and bedding, edge details, joints, drainage, covers, waste, VAT and reinstatement. Clarify known services, access and how concealed obstructions are approved. A square-metre headline can exclude the ground work that makes the result complete. Compare the same specification and warranty terms. Ask when vehicles can use the area and how the property remains accessible during the programme.
- The complete construction, not only the blocks.
- Drainage, edges, covers and finished levels.
- Excavation, waste, VAT and access arrangements.
Agree upkeep and keep useful records
For a Braintree enquiry, explain the surface area, vehicle use, existing levels, access and whether you want repairs or new paving. Keep photographs and previous drainage or installation records if available. Ask the business to identify the base, joints, edging and cleaning and replenishment needs in the handover.
At a shared or rented frontage, agree who maintains the paving and any channels or chambers. A paved surface can cover a public asset, so identify ownership and retain necessary access rather than treating every cover as disposable. The business confirms its scope and availability directly; submitting this form does not book an installation or approve a drainage connection.
